Brief on The School for the Deaf and School and Home for Blind

1. The Society for the Welfare of Handicapped (Regd) Patiala, Punjab, INDIA was established in 1967 and since then is running the two schools for the Deaf and Blind free of cost from the premises of a building given to the Society by S. Kishan Singh Kamboj Charitable Trust free of rent. At that time there was no such institution in whole of North India to impart specialized education to these deprived sections of Society and is a pioneer in this field of specialized education.

2. A large number of Deaf and Blind students have since studied here and are well settled in life. Most of the Deaf students are settled in their own vocation, whereas most of the Blind students after getting their degree are in Govt jobs.

3. The Society is registered under the Societies Act as per the Govt of India charter of regulations and functions within the parameters of the Act. It has a broad base of life members who elect the office bearers every year in the General Body meeting. The executive committee consists of 15 members with some prominent personalities co-opted as special invitees to over see the working of the Executive.

4. This residential school caters to the Deaf children of North India and surrounding areas. Children come to this school from far off places also, as specialized schools do not exist everywhere. We are proud to have deaf and blind children from as far as Leh and Ladakh.

5. The school provides education up to class VIII. The school provides education in a scientific manner. It has well equipped classrooms with sound imaging and loop induction, systems that enable the students to pick up speech. Qualified staff, as per norms of Govt. of India, teaches all subjects as per the Punjab School education board syllabus.

6. The students are also given training in the following;

  • Speech Therapy: Qualified teachers teach speech therapy to all the students.
  • Sing Language: Sing language is taught to all by qualified teachers.
  • Candle Making: Candle making, especially the making of fancy candles, is part of the curriculum.
  • Arts and Craft: Art and Craft is taught, in which various types of items are made, and are on display at the school.
  • Tailoring: Tailoring is taught to all the students by qualified staff, as part of the vocational training.
  • Chalk Making: The students are being introduced to vocational training in chalk making from this year onwards
  • Cultural Items: Despite the handicap, students are well versed in presenting cultural items in an expert manner like other children
  • Other Activities: Due to paucity of space and funds, adequate attention is not paid to sports and other such like activities such as bookbinding, computers education, recreation, etc.
  • Computer Education: The Society is very keen to impart computer education to students. At present it has only one computer due to paucity of funds.

7. The Deaf school has a total capacity of 70 students. However at present, the school has 86 students on its rolls. The school also has 70 children in the hostel and the remaining are day scholars. All expenses of the children including hostel expanses, books, stationary, uniforms, are all met by the Society. The education is charity and no charges are levied by the society.

8. The school cum home for the blind caters to 20 students. The capacity of the boarding is 20 and at present the school has 23 students of which 21 are staying in the hostel. The hostel is their second home and some of them have been staying in the home for as many as 30 years.

9. The blind students are given education in the following:

  • Braille language: The school has trained Braille language teacher and all teachers are given training in Braille.
  • Music: Trained teacher gives all students training in music.
  • Caning: The school has a trained caning teacher and all students are proficient in caning.
  • Candle Making: The students are also going to be given training in candle making from this year onwards in case space is available.
  • Computer Education: The Society is unable to provide computer education due to lack of space and availability of funds.

10. The society provides totally free education and lodging and boarding facilities to all the students. The students are also paid a monthly stipend.

11. The Society for the Welfare of the Handicapped (Regd) Patiala, is striving to give quality education to the Deaf and Blind within the constraints of accommodation and funds.

12. The society is meeting all its expenses through donations from the public, who repose full faith in our society. The work of the society has never come under criticism and the children are a happy lot.

13. Recently the society has been donated 4000 sq. yds of land in village Saifdipur near Punjabi University. Registration of land in the name of the society has been done. To meet the full requirements of the society, it has purchased an additional 1700 sq yds of land for RS 14 lakh. The society is now planning a very modern complex for 300 Deaf and 150 Blind children with seperate arrangements of boys and girls.

14. The present management is a dedicated and an experienced group. The President is a retired Principal, The Vice President is an engineer and a social worker of fame, and the secretary is a retired Officer from the Army, with 28 years of experience and administration. Whereas we have special invitees who have retired as vice Chancellor of a top university and bureaucrats who have retired from the Govt service and eminent personalities to guide us.
